The Earthen Pot

I went to a Flea Market a bit unwillingly but then when nephews call to spend time with you, you hardly have a choice. I was supposed to meet them a little early for a Sunday morning but I reached in time. I called one of my nephews only to realize he hadn’t even started from home. He suggested that I go in and look around. I hesitated to take up his suggestion but the greed for materialistic possessions took over good sense and there I was just picking up whatever took my fansy! I infact had no cash with me and so installed PAYTM and paid! Nothing seemed to be a hindrance or a challenge! One prized possession amidst all the junk was a beautiful earthen pot and it had a nice glazed finish to it! I was informed that I could place it on a gas stove too for cooking! I picked it up thinking I had got it at a throw away price! The next morning as I placed it on the stove to make sambhar, I dreamt of the smell of sambhar in the purest and unsullied form wafting through my house! I was ru

Happy Women's Day!

Happy women's day to all the women in my life! The women in my family have taught me and helped me to bring to surface the spirit of womanhood - Don't look for external support systems, you are the best and so help yourself is what has been the essence of their message to me through their lives. My grandmother who lost her mother in her childhood, who was brought up by a single parent and trained by the neighbourhood ladies was an epitome of self confidence, progressive in thinking and an all rounder!. She assessed the skill set of her daughter, grand daughters on the parameters like praying, cooking, organizing, maintaining the house and the articles therein, painting, embroidery, creative work, cleanliness, economies of scale, discipline of time and sense, literature reading, novels, special dishes, friends making, following processes in whatever one did in life, being the support system to all family members and helping them in all kinds of situations -the benchmark bein

Ufffffffffffff…… invigilation!!

Image
We have now reached a point of time in the academic year which most teachers find it dreadful, disgusting! It’s a kind of Thanksgiving by students! Its invigilation and correction time! You suddenly realize that all those days of understanding nods, right questions, leading questions, that twinkle of excitement in the eye has just turned out to be a mirage! You don’t see the understanding neither in the way they write their exams nor in their answer scripts! Today was my day of invigilation and one of the T shirts(worn by students) read – Sometimes I just can’t help myself! The way he was actually behaving in the examination hall, it looked as if he couldn’t help himself  'all the time'! I thought it would be a miracle if I could help myself from spanking him! Grrrrr… Another guy wore a T shirt which said – Must sleep! Ufffff! What a gen! I am surely not talking about the T shirts but their approach to decisive moments of life! My dad would repeatedly narrate

TRUE EDUCATION!

Ths Sathya Sai Arts and science college for women at Ananthapur came into existence on July 22nd 1968! The sathya Sai Arts and Science college at Whitfield, Bangalore came into existence on 9th June 1969! The Sathya Sai college at Prashanthi Nilayam came into existence in the year 1978! The Sathya Sai University started in the year 1981! Right from the establishment of the first of the colleges by Bhaghwan Sri Sathya Sai Baba in the year 1968, He has been giving FREE EDUCATION to all the students which means there is no tuition fee, no lab fee, no library fee, no examination fee, no kind of fee at all! Moreover, discipline is the medium of instruction! People always feel that what comes free is always of poor quality! My teachers are some of the best! They are well read, totally committed, extremely articulate and highly qualified! We are steeped in values like humility, truth, peace and love! Service is a way of life here! The transformation that we undergo here is phenomenal! It is

The crowded loneliness

I stand in a crowd and yet a sense of loneliness engulfs me! I see familiar faces and yet there is a sense of unfamiliarity! It isn’t a friendly world that I see any longer! It has changed utterly and disastrously! I don’t see any of the faces from the past! I don’t see the faces that trusted me and loved me! It seems as though I am surrounded by a million smiling faces but the faces are blurred! They are close to me yet so far from the real me! I was convinced for some time that it was one big bad dream! I see the bad and the ugly and its many facets rising like the tsunami and engulfing into its lap the very young and the very old alike! I see faces spewing venom all around me! I see corruption! I see threat, I see malice and a chilling fear running up my spine! I ask myself – Where is fear? Isn’t it in the absence of God! I could feel Him holding my hand and with me as I was going through these chilling experiences! He was like the Mother intent on giving the required va

The Regressive attitude!

I was enjoying speeding in my Alto oblivious to everything else other than the exhilarating feeling of watching the road ahead and the beautiful site of the winding roads hugging sometimes paddy fields and sometimes Mango groves! All of a sudden I noticed a car from behind trying to overtake my vehicle and for a while I intended to keep up my speed but then better sense prevailed over me. I moved to a side to give way to the other vehicle! As soon as the car occupants had overtaken me, I saw them giving Hifi to one another followed by a quick triumphant glance– very excited that they had overtaken me! My first reaction was – how idiotic!! During one of those chatty sessions with my colleagues the kind who dole out advices whether you want it or not! My colleague told me that I should stop commuting by my car as it was risky driving such a long distance everyday! He gave me two solutions – to commute by the transportation provided by the organization or to have a driver to drive my car
